Making Process Improvements Stick
Once is not enough: reaching immediate gains with process improvement programs and sustaining them in the short-term doesn’t assure that they will last in the long-term.
To make process improvements stick, companies must concentrate their effort on four key factors that – if correctly implemented – can make improvement continuous and not only sustainable:
- Communicate the improvement program in a clear way that aligns with the organization’s purpose.
- Direct efforts toward pain points whose easing would clearly benefit employees.
- Ensure that senior leaders act as coaches, providing visible support and enabling small wins to increase employees’ engagement.
- Consistent process measurement and monitoring.
Focusing on these factors is likely to decrease the chance that the benefits of process improvement programs will fade away.
